CountyLineJune2012www.CountyLineMagazine.net8DiDyouknowthattrafficcrashesarethe1causeofDeathamongyoungaDultsunDertwenty-oneOrthatateenx19sriskofbeinginacarcrashisatalifetimehighintheir0rst12-24monthsofdrivingSadlythefatalityratefordriversage16-19isfourtimesthatofdriversage25to69.Thesearebutafewofthealarmingstatisticsondriversbetweentheagesof16and21.Recognizingthedangertodriversundertheageoftwenty-oneinJohnsCreekinJuly2009theMunicipalCourtandPoliceDe-partmentlaunchedSTOPaninterventionprogramthateducatestraf0cviolatorswhoaretwenty-oneandunderondriversafety.ThemotivationtostarttheprogramwastheresultofdiscussionsbetweenMunicipalCourtJudgeDonaldSchaeferandClerkoftheCourtTonyDaywhowerediscouragedbythedisproportionatenumberofdriversundertheageoftwenty-onethatwereonthecourtx19scalen-darfortraf0cviolations.Theydiscussedlaunchingaprogramtoincreaseawarenessofthedangersofdrivingandtoincreasesafedriving.x1cWeareveryproudofourprogramandtheimpactithashadonouryoungdrivers.Ifitpreventsoneyounglifefrombeinglostwehavesucceededx1dstatedTonyDay.Theprogramhasbothavoluntaryandmandatorymodule.VoluntaryModuleParentsmayregisteravehiclethatisdrivenbyafamilymemberundertheageoftwenty-onebycompletingaregistrationformonlineorattheJohnsCreekPoliceDepartmentJCPD.Oncetheformiscompletedwiththeteendriverx19snamethevehicledescriptionandcontactinformationitremainson0lewiththeJCPD.Asubtledecalthatidenti0esthedriverandvehicleasregisteredwiththevoluntarySTOPprogramisplacedintheupperleftcorneroftherearwindow.Ifthecarisbeingoperatedbythedriverwhoisundertwenty-oneandisstoppedbyanof0cerwiththeJCPDtheof0cerwillcompleteanoti0cationformthatincludesthetimelocationnumberofpassengersthereasonforthestopandwhetheracitationwasissued.Parentswillreceiveanemailwithinformationaboutthestopwhetheracitationwasissuedandanypotentialproblems.MandatoryModuleAlltraf0cviolatorsundertheageoftwenty-onemustattendamandatorysessionoftheSTOPpro-gram.SessionsareheldeveryothermonthinthecourtroomoftheJohnsCreekMunicipalCourt.Thesessionsareapproximatelytwohourswiththreespeakerspresentinginformation.MunicipalJudgeDonaldSchaeferspeaksaboutthelawhowitre-latestodriversundertheageoftwenty-oneandhowthelawaffectsthem.x1cIhopethatourprogrammakesanimpressiononparentsandteensalikethatallactionshaveconsequencestopayatten-tionwhendrivingandtoalwayswearaseatbelt.Wedothisbecausewecareandweknowhowwewerewhenweweretheiragex1dsaidJudgeSchaefer.JohnsCreekFireDepartmentDivisionChiefChrisbyJudyLeJeunephotographycourtesyoftheCityofJohnsCreek
