CountyLineSeptember2011TheCycloramaTheCivilWarMuseumTheAtlantaCycloramaCivilWarMu-seumislocatedat800CherokeeAve-nueSEinGrantPark.ItisopenTuesdaythroughSaturdaywithshowseveryhouronthehalfhourfrom930amto430pm.Admissionis10foradults8forseniors8forchildren4-12andfreeforchildrenunder3.TheCycloramabookstoreoffersawideselectionofbooksandotheritemsontheAmericanCivilWarperiod.Freeparkingisavail-ablewithadmission.Formoreinforma-tionvisitwww.atlantacyclorama.orgorcall404-658-7625.painting.Whenitwascompletedin1886thepaint-ingwas50-feethigh400-feetlongandweighedover9000pounds.Becauseofdamagesandre-pairstothepaintingduringmovesitnowmeasures42-feethighand358-feetlong.Itisstillthelarg-estoilpaintingintheworld.AfterbeingonexhibitincitiesfromDetroittoIndianapolisandchangingownershipseveraltimesthepaintingwassoldtoAtlantabusinessmanGeorgeV.Gresswhodonat-edittotheCityofAtlanta.IthasbeenondisplayinGrantParksince1893.In1921TheCycloramawasmovedtoitscurrentlocationinGrantPark.In1936adioramathatblendsseamlesslywiththepaintingwasaddedandprovidesathree-dimensionalfore-groundforthepainting.This30-footspanislledwiththree-dimensionalscenesthatinclude128sol-diersthetallestofwhichis3-feet.ThedioramaaddsanelementofrealismtotheCyclorama.Withtheexceptionofatwo-yearperiodfrom1979to1981thattheCycloramawasshutdownforrepairstothepaintingandupdatestothemuseumandthe-aterithasbeencontinuouslyondisplayandisthelongestrunningshowintheUnitedStates.TheCycloramatourbeginswitha14-minutelmofeventsleadinguptotheBattleofAtlanta.VisitorsarethenescortedtotheCycloramatheatertoex-periencetheBattleofAtlantawhilerotatinginthetheaterintheroundwhichprovidesa360-degreeviewofthepaintingthatisaccompaniedbyahis-toricalnarrationinvelanguagesandsurroundsoundeffects.Everyyearthereareover150000visitorstotheCyclorama.Artifactsthatincludeuniformsphotographsandweaponsareondisplayontwooorsofthemuse-um.Atouch-screencomputersystemisavailabletotellthestoryoftheCivilWarandvideosrecountthehistoryoftheCivilWarperiodandtherestorationofthepainting.ThecenterpieceofthemuseumisthesteamlocomotiveTexaswhichplayedakeyroleintheGreatLocomotiveChaseof1862.TheTexaswasusedbytheConfederatestopursueandrecoverthelocomotiveGeneralthatwasstolenbyUnionraid-ers.FollowingthewartheTexasremainedinser-viceuntil1908.ItwasmovedtoGrantParkin1911andintoTheCycloramain1927.23
