MembersofFriendsofJohnsCreekpresentJuliannaRueChildrensHealthcareofAtlantaliaisonwiththecheckfromDerbyDay.photobyAllisonWachsCountyLineSeptember2011www.CountyLineMagazine.netbyJonnaPointer24InJuneof2000myfriendandneighborLisaOdendahlsoldestsonMitchellwasdiagnosedwithaveryraretypeofkidneycancercalledaWilmsTumor.Hewaseighteenmonthsoldatthetimeandseeminglythepictureofhealthuntilhisdaddiscoveredbloodinhisurine.LisasaidthatwhileexaminingMitchellsabdomentheERdoc-torutteredwordsthatwouldforeverchangetheirlivesWhatsthisTheressomethinghere.AftersurgerytoremovetheaffectedkidneyandbiopsylymphnodesthenaldiagnosiswasaStageThreeUnfavorableHistologyWilmsTumorsorarethatitonlyaffectseightchildrenayearintheUnitedStates.Mitchellwasscheduledtoundergoradiationtotheabdomenandsixmonthsofinpatientche-motherapyattheAacCancerCenteratChildrensHealthcareofAtlantascampus.HistreatmentwaslongandhardbutMitchellhandleditamazinglywellthanksingreatparttotheamazingfacilitiesandstaffattheAacCancerCenter.InDecember2000justbeforehis2ndbirthdayMitchellwaspro-nouncedcancerfreeHeisnowahealthy7graderatAutreyMillMiddleSchoolandjoyfullycelebratedtenyearsinremissionthispastDecember.Toexpresshergratitudeforthecarehersonre-ceivedatChildrensHealthcareofAtlantaCHOALisadecidedtobeginaFriendsofChildrensHealth-careofAtlantagroupinthefallof2006.ThesolemissionofaFriendsgroupistohelpraisefundsforCHOA.EachyearFriendsalignsitsfundraisingandservicegoalswiththemissionofCHOA.Pro-ceedsfromeachFriendsfundraisingyearbenetprogramsandprovideequipmenttomeetthebasicbutverycriticalneedsofourcommunityschildren.WhatstartedoffwithasingleemailLisasenttoherfriendsandneighborshasgrownintoagroupofmorethan60womenwhohaveraisedover200000forChildrensHealthcareofAtlantainthelastveyears.TheirrstyeartheyraisedmoneybysellingPikeNurseriesgiftcardspoinsettiasandholidaycardsaswellascollectinghundredsoftoi-letriesmagazinesandvideosforthepatientsfami-lies.In2007fellowMedlockBridgeresidentKel-thFriendsofJohnsCreekBenetingChildrensHealthcareofAtlanta
