CountyLineSeptember2011PhotoDistrictNewsMagazineJawsplacerevealingaworldfullofcaptivatinguniquecreaturesthatmanypeoplenevergettosee.Itakemycamerawithmeoneverydiveandtrytocreatethatsamesenseofadventureanddiscoverywithmyphotography.Hisdivesareallfreedivingnotwithscubagear.ChrisRosscantellastorythroughphotographsandthatwassomethingCostaDelMarSunglasseswaslookingfor.Thecompanyphilosophyistobeadven-turoustakerisksandbeastorytellerandtheiryearlycataloglayoutisalwaysplannedaroundanadventure.ChrisreputationledCostaDelMartohirehimin2008tophotographacatalog.Itwasa14-daytripinthejungleonthewaterandunderthewater.HisworkhasearnedChrisawardsfromADDYandPhoto-shop.comSpotlight.RickBachfromGoFISHncalledChristopherRossthebestshphotographerever.ThatswhytheNationalGeographicChannelaskedChristopar-ticipateintheirExpeditionGreatWhitedocumen-taryin2008and2009.Hewasaboardaboatthatcaughtandtooksamplesofgreatwhitesharks160milesoffthecoastofBajaCA.Fewpeoplehavetheopportunitytoswimwithsharksinthewildandtakeup-closeandpersonalphotographsofthesemagnicentcreaturessharesChris.ThereisnocagetoprotecthimwhenChrisandhiscameraareunderwaterfacingashark.Heisloweredbelowthesurfaceonacradlewhichissimplyanopenplat-form.IadmitsomeoftheshotsItrytogetcanbequitedaringbutImcaughtupinthemoment.WhenIcancaptureallthedramaofthemomentinasinglephotoitsexciting.ChrisvividlyremembersoneparticularshotfromtheExpeditionGreatWhitedocumentary.Heandanothercrewmemberwereonthecradlefacingan18-footshark.WelookedateachotherwithanexpressionthatsaidArewereallydoingthisItwaslikethemovie.Inordertobringthesharkonboardwehadtotireheroutforabout30to45minutes.Shewascomingatusslowlywithabigtoothygrinandthenstartedtoturnandaphertailwildly.Chrisreallydoesntthinkaboutthedangerwhenhesbehindthecameralenshejustdoeswhatheneedstodotogettheshot.Onanotherassign-menthewasoffthecoastofMiamiwithateamthatwasshingforsailsh.Likesharkssailshneedtotirebeforebeingbroughtonboardsotheboathastokeeprunningalongsidethehookedsh.AbowlinewassecuredaroundChriswaistandhejumpedoverboard.Hehadtostaywiththemovingshwhilesnappingpicturesunderwater.Itsprettywildtoseeaswordcomingatyouthroughthecam-eralens.Ireallydidntthinkabouttherisk.Wegottheshotandthatsallthatmatters.9
